Internhip
Internship: Office intern at Henry Haight Elementary School (summer school)
Personal Interests and Skills
After High School, I want to work with kids or infants. I have two things in mind. I either want to be somewhere along the lines of a counselor, teacher, therapist or I want to have a medical relation to kids or infants by being a Pediatrician or a Neonatal nurse. I have always wanted to be either a teacher or a Neonatal nurse. I know that there are different requirements for both and the internship will either support one side more or get rid of one side. Interning will require the skills I have which are being able to work with a team, being able to work with kids because I volunteered with Leaps After School program for 2 years, managing time wisely, and being very organized. Working with children would help me see what children go through. This will the line of work I want to pursue, whether it’s education or something in the medical field.
Week 1 Log (9 Hours)
30 June 2018
To start off the internship, I went to Haight Elementary to talk to the Leaps Summer school supervisor after calling to ask for an internship. I talked to the supervisor and we reviewed the ACLC Internship handbook and went over my schedule. After this, I officially started as the intern the next day which was a Thursday. This week I only completed two days, but there was a lot to learn. As the office intern, I had to be able to know the school, in and out. It was my first time at Haight Elementary, so it took both days to know where all the rooms were located and get to know some of the students. This week was just slightly challenging because the supervisor assumed I knew the location of the classrooms, so when they needed me to open classrooms, give teachers material, along with taking the younger students to their classroom, it took some time to know the school. I successfully got through the week and got to know some students which will further help me out with future situations.
Week 2 Log (9 Hours)
7 July 2018
This week was also a two day week due to my scheduling and 4th of July. I went on both Tuesday and Friday. Due to my scheduling and taking a class on Mondays to Thursdays and having a family problem. I did contact my supervisor about not being able to attend which had a slight outcome of myself not having the right number. I lucky knew someone that was at Haight and got to my supervisor.
I was at Haight for two hours on Tuesday and a full day on Friday. On Friday, I had to get up really early and be at school at the same time the teachers would be there, at 8:00 am. It was a slight struggle on Friday because I woke up late and had to drive to Haight, but I made it on time. This week I helped a K1 class along with 3rd-grade class. I brought the breakfast for the students, made sure students were in their classrooms, made sure students were playing safely during recess. Specifically, on Friday, it was fun because a representative from The Lawrence Hall of Science came and myself along with some volunteers and staff assisted the students in stations. The station I was at was creating origami shapes. This week was very good, I knew the school and it’s structure very well and went through my duties very efficiently.
Week 3 Log (4 Hours)
13 July 2018
I finished this week off by interning on Tuesday and Wednesday. At this point the children there are really excited because summer school ends on Friday and it was a slight hassle to handle their excitement. This week I did the task as the supervisor. I made sure all 8 or so teachers classrooms were open and prepared the materials if needed, such as the Chromebook cart. I also helped out with the younger children that needed help getting to their classrooms along with running errands for them. Due to the summer school almost over, there wasn’t much conflict or much to do.
I really enjoyed this internship and made lots of memories with the children and helping them out. This internship reminded me of the times I volunteered at Ruby Bridges Elementary. It was a different scene because it was summer school, but I overall enjoyed my 20 hours or so working with my supervisor.

After the internship that I have completed, I’ve seen the many skills that I provided and used daily. My communication and efficiency skills, along with being adaptable to a new location and being able to work with children, staff, and volunteers. When it came to my internship, my daily duties were to support the supervisors in making sure that the staff was settled, whether it was having all the right materials or accounting for the children in the room. I also helped as a teacher's assistant with various activities whether it was inside or out.
Doing all of these duties required me to know the structure of the school and how it functions and well it was a challenge. Haight Elementary, is a huge school, took some time to fully know but in my case, I had to make it work within five minutes. The first day of my internship I was given tasks and haven’t been shown around the school, but I made it work. I had to ask around and make my way through the school and fulfill my duties.
This internship showed me the way children are at the age and the challenges that they face daily, education wise or socially. Many students struggled with the assignment that they received from their summer school teacher. I helped the students with their work and honestly, it brought joy to my heart. They were happy so I was as well. When it came to how the students were social, there was bullying happening, similar to every school. I had to get the students through those problems. I have to say that it was challenging for the older students because they were more stubborn but I still went through it.
In conclusion, the internship was what I expected and nothing less because I assumed it would be similar to when I volunteered at Ruby Bridges Elementary. I had to help numerous teachers with getting materials or supervise students within the classroom to help them pay attention to their teacher. I also helped students during their recess and any problems they may have had with another student. Overall, I enjoyed this internship and those I worked with throughout it.
